Nothing to see here… unless nature is enough for you
If you were planning to come to Mount Desert Island while the Coronavirus was still a national crisis a year ago, what would you expect?
Don’t expect things to be as they were the last time you were here. This time, your vacation on the Island will be very different…
…but much more peaceful, refreshing and pleasant. It was so, as long as the Coronavirus emergency was with us… and as long as you prefered a hike through forests, over hills and along coastlines, instead of window shopping, dining out and large crowds.
Where to stay
The following hotels were open:
Each of these hotels was going above and beyond their already strict housekeeping and cleanliness procedures to provide maximum protection from the spread of the Coronavirus.
We always recommend that you book your reservation directly with the hotel instead of with third-party websites. When you did, you would ask the reservation specialist what they are doing to keep their guests safe from the Coronavirus. I’m sure you’ll be impressed.
Where to eat
As in other parts of the United States, the sit-down restaurants, bars or cafés on the island were all closed. The ones which were “open” were providing take-out or delivery for their guests.
Thankfully, the Hannaford Supermarket on Cottage Street in Bar Harbor remained open, but with limited hours.
Hotel restaurants were doing their best to keep their guests safe during the Coronavirus concern. For example, the Atlantic Oceanside provides bagged breakfasts for their guests instead of their usual buffet, and disinfects public surfaces hourly.
What to do
If you are coming to Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island, get out and walk around! The snow is gone; the grass is only just turning green. Yet, the fresh air and exercise will chase the flu away!
The Criterion and Reel Pizza were closed. In fact, the only “pictures” showing are “Sunrise on Cadillac Mountain“, “Waterfalls on the Carriage Road” and “Escape from Bar Island“.
None of the shops, tour buses and boat tours open in the Spring, anyway. In fact, the lobster boats weren’t even in Frenchman Bay yet. Sherman’s Bookstore was the only shop open.
Finally, in keeping in line with national state of emergency, public gatherings were being limited to 10 people or less. Thus, Bar Harbor Inn cancelled their Easter Celebration and Buffet that year.
