Was that thunder… or was it the voice of God?

Some hear thunder, while others hear the voice of God

The Day of Pentecost

There are spiritual things going on all around us.  God is speaking… but we often miss His voice because our eyes are focused on the wrong place.

Acts 2:12-13 (Modern Translation of the Wycliffe Bible):

All were astonished and surprised, saying to one another, “What will this thing become?”  Others mocked them, saying, “They are full of new wine!”

On the Day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit enabled the believers to speak in the languages of the foreigners who had come from all over the world to celebrate.  Whether they were from modern Turkey, Egypt, Libya or Saudi Arabia, the onlookers heard them sharing God’s great works in their languages.

The curse of Babylon was reversed!  Instead of confusing the languages, God allowed the apostles to share the Good News in the languages of the visitors who had come to Jerusalem!

And yet, while others heard foreign languages being spoken, others heard the blabbing of drunkards instead.

Even today, one person sees a miracle, while another sees a phenomenon which can be explained by science or nature.

Jesus was about to go to the cross.  He was praying to God, when suddenly…

John 12:28b-29, also from the Modern Translation of the Wycliffe Bible:

Thunder from Heaven, or the Voice of God?A voice came from the sky, saying,

“I have caused [my name] to be praised,

and afterward I will again cause it to be praised.”

So the people who stood and heard this said that thunder made noise.

Other people said, “An angel spoke to him.”

Everyone heard the same noise.  For some, it was the voice of God!  They even heard the words He said, and they all heard the same thing.  But for others, it was just the roar of thunder, the transfer of static electricity from one cloud to another.

And this is also true in our world today.

Some hear thunder, while others hear the voice of God.
