Make room for Jehovah to build the house
Psalms 127:1-2 (LITV) A Song of Ascents, for Solomon.
If Jehovah does not build the house,
they who build it labor in vain;
if Jehovah does not keep the city,
the one keeping it stays awake in vain.
It is in vain for you to rise early, sit up late,
to eat the bread of toils;
for so He gives His beloved sleep.
I put SO much effort into making sure that my family have all that they need! Up to a certain point, it is out of obedience to the LORD, for He says in 2 Thessalonians 3:10 that “If a man does not want to work, neither should he eat.”
However, at a certain point, I cross the border of faith into anxiety. I pour my margins into trying to do God’s job for Him. I wear myself out, and end up being unpleasant to be around for those I seek to bless with all my hard labor.
What does it mean to cross the border from faith to anxiety?
I need to always be busy doing what He has given me to do, but refuse to allow myself to do His job for Him.
This Scripture reminds me to trust Him. Trusting Him means that I make room for Him to build the house instead of trying in vain to build it all by myself, or to get it done sooner than He wants me to.
I need to make room for Him be the Boss, and take my place as His servant. I work for Him, and leave the results and responsibility in His capable hands.
I especially love these verses, because they give me permission to do something I hesitate to do: to go to bed and get some rest at the end of a busy day. The Psalmist encourages me to rest, even when there are still many unfinished tasks on my desk.
When we rest, we make room for Him to work on our behalf.
