As early April approached this year, I wanted to take fifty days to work on a ministry project. I was thinking that it would be something like a new prayer guide or a podcast.

After praying about it, I really felt the need to focus on finding a new source of income. Before I can work on ministry things, I must find something to do locally to pay my bills.

It has been an adventure to keep my eyes and ears open for opportunities! And to see Him take care of needs!

The mailboxes in the village are down the hill from us, just a short walk away. Each day, after praying and working on the goal He has given me, I walk down to the mail. As I do, I consider the lessons I can learn from the birds, the flowers, and all He has created.

As it says in Matthew 6:26, “Look at the birds of the air. They do not show, nor do they reap, nor do they gather into barns. And yet, your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not more precious than they are?”

Here are some of the lessons I have learned on my walks to the mailbox:

God does not just meet our needs through a salary. Because of this, I am learning to pray for His provision, not for the money to buy what I need.

A bird will eat the best available. Once the best is gone, they move on to second best.

Over time, all the animals learn where to find food, and go there to see if there’s anything to eat.

The birds have never worked a day in their lives… but we sure have some fat birds up here. (especially the Blue Jays!)

When God provides our needs outside of a “nine-to-five”, what He gives us can’t be taxed.

When a stream flows, it flows consistently, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Likewise, His provision is consistent when we trust in God, and make Him our refuge. (Jeremiah 17:5-8)

Each day, I need to get up early and do what needs to be done today. (Matthew 6:34)

To have a harvest, we often have to work through the rain and cold weather. (Proverbs 20:4)

There will also be days where all I can do is wait for the seed to grow. It does no good to pull the plants out of the ground before they are ready. (Mark 4:24-29)
