Spoiled Turkey: How God brought me through a lonely holiday celebration

Holiday celebrations are meant to be spent with family and friends. The smell of turkey roasting in the oven, of pine from a real Christmas tree and home cooked goodies warm our hearts. We close our eyes and savor the realization: we are part of a family we love.

Don’t spend your holidays alone

But what if this year, we spend the holiday all alone?

I’d like to share this testimony of what God did to meet me at Thanksgiving this year (2020).

I was feeling very sorry for myself, disappointed at what I would be missing – the smell of turkey and being home with family.

My last year’s Thanksgiving (2019) in Bar Harbor, Maine had been very difficult. That evening, I celebrated the day with strangers at the Trailhead Café next to the Criterion Theater. It was one of those community potlucks for people without family.

The food was good – no complaints there. Rather, what was so difficult was being a total stranger to everyone. I didn’t know how to start the conversation. I felt so alone.

Yet, even that day, God provided several consolations:

First, I was able to work on Thanksgiving Day at the Front Desk of the Bar Harbor Inn. This allowed me to keep my mind off the sadness of being away from family for most of the day.

Second, the General Manager brought a plate of food from his Thanksgiving Dinner for me to enjoy. It was so delicious! And the family atmosphere in which it was prepared still lingered on the plate.

This year (2020) was a little different. The hotel had to close a bit early due to a COVID-19 scare at the restaurant. Thankfully, I was able to work three more weeks in maintenance, through the holiday.

Ada Ehi: I Testify

Store up the Testimonies of what God has done for you

In this song, Nigerian Gospel Singer Ada Ehi sings about our testimonies of God’s faithfulness.  These are testimonies of things He has done for you when you desperately needed His help.
From where I sit today, I could testify of SO many stories of His faithfulness! Here are a few of them:

What has He done for you over this past year to keep you going during the Coronavirus Crisis?

When God pours out Testimony Treasures, it’s important that we stockpile them for our greatest time of need.
While you are out shopping for Thanksgiving groceries this week, I’d encourage you to buy a beautiful, sturdy notebook, and maybe a fancy pen.

Then, every day, fill your notebook with God’s promises to you, and testimonies of His faithfulness!  Some nuggets may be small, like the blessing of a candy bar you rarely touch, or a song on the radio, or the hug of a little child.
Small or great, write them down in your Spiritual Journal. Fill your storehouse of faith with fuel for the times you’ll need it most.

“They overcame [the accuser] through the blood of the Lamb, and through the word of their testimony about him. They did not love their lives to the point of refusing to die.” (Revelation 12:11, MWNT)

Early Birth Pains and the End Times?

As of the writing of this post (June 2020), we have been experiencing worldwide plagues, riots in the streets, earthquakes, tornadoes… and so much more. You may be wondering, “Is it all over? Are we at the end of history as we know it? Is this the “End Times” prophesied about in the Bible?

Personally, I don’t think so. Not yet.

Time moves forward, one day at a time. So logically, if we believe there is a Biblical End Time coming, we are definitely headed toward it.

As I understand the Bible, we’re in the time of Early Birth Pains, which is spoken of in Matthew 24:

For you will hear about battles and news about battles. See that you do not become disturbed by what you hear. These things must happen, but it does not mean that the end has arrived. Folk will rise together against other folk, and realms will rise against other realms. Different places will experience epidemics, famines, and earthquakes. All these troubles are like early birth pains. (Matthew 24:6-8, MWNT)
